Fashion week is a fashion event usually lasting for a week where famous brands and designers showcase their latest designs in runway shows to consumers and the media. This year’s fashion week kicked off last week in New York, and is now happening in London as well.
The first New York Fashion Week was held in 1943. It was World War II and workers in the fashion industry were unable to travel to Paris, the most fashionable country back then. So to distract themselves, they held a fashion week which pioneered the preceding fashion weeks up to this year.
New York Fashion Week 2016 held an estimated 256 shows. Rodarte, Marc Jacobs, Hood by Air, Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang, Rag and Bone and Eckhaus Latta were among the shows that showcased the best collections. Lady Gaga is one of the celebrity highlights in the New York Fashion week. She walked for the Marc Jacobs show.
London Fashion Week also has its share of big names in the fashion industry including Alexa Chung, Alexander McQueen and Julien MacDonald.
Fashion week is a great way to remind all of us the importance of fashion. For most of us, clothes merely exist to cover our nudity, but for dedicated designers, models and fashion enthusiasts, the clothes being showcased on the runway is art. Fashion week is a beautiful distraction from the daily chaos that happens in the world.
Pictures from various shows are being shown on print, television and on the internet. One can’t help being awe at such wonderful creations.
